I took the puppies to the vet 10-22-08

View all Pictures

“I took the puppies to the vet today and we all hag fun! We try to schedule for the end of the day so everyone can play with the puppies. Fortunately we had plenty of puppies to go around. Dr. Whetstone did the honors and Dallas helped him. The puppies have really grown since they were last weighed.

Helen 2.91 pounds
Luke 3.34 pounds
Isabella 3.84 pounds
Gabe 3.56 pounds
Maggie Whetstone 2.34 pounds

It’s interesting that they all still weigh in the same range that they did when they were born. All the babies are healthy and the boys both have all their boy “parts”.

We’re going to the photographer tomorrow and then to see Karin on Friday, the 24th when they will be eight weeks old. It’s really been a fast eight weeks. The puppies love to be outside and are discovering all kinds of interesting things to play with. They love to chase leaves, drag around small sticks and chase a tennis ball. They roll and tumble and play until they all just drop – usually in Missy’s cat crate. They curl up in there until its time to play again. They are eating puppy food, but still try to get a snack from Ivy whenever they can, but she is not very receptive to that. She’s loves to play with them, but has decided that she’s through with nursing. With all those teeth, I don’t blame her. Dr. Whetstone said that all their bites were good so they are ready for their new homes.”

From Maggie Whetstone...

I don't know why all my siblings are making such a BIG deal out of the fact that I have two names. Maybe if they understood why, it would help. The way that I understand it is that I'm named after our vet, Dr. Whetstone. He is really nice and when my humans thought that we were all born -- I fooled them, didn't I? -- he thought that he felt me still inside my Cavalier mom Ivy. And I was! It was a really l-o-n-g way to travel for me to be born and I was born at his office! My human Mom wanted to name me after him, but since I was a girl, she couldn't call me a boy's name and so that's why I have two names -- after Dr. W. Now I hope that everyone understands why I have two names -- it's really just to remember Dr. W and how nice he was to all of us. Sincerely, your friend Maggie Whetstone...

From Luke...

I am the youngest puppy and I don't care if I have two names -- so there. I'm a quiet little guy and my human Mom says that I have a really nice head. I don't know what that means, but if she says so it must be so. It's really crowded with all my siblings and we're growing every day so it gets more crowded every day. I'm not as big as the rest so I really have to make sure that I get enough to eat.

My Cavalier mom Ivy, is such a good mom. She really takes good care of all of us. She keeps us clean and makes sure that we all have enough to eat. Nathan -- that really cool guy that is taking care of us -- says that Mom tried to swim the lake in the backyard and got really wet. There sure was a lot of that wet stuff falling down outside, but we were all nice and warm here in Nathan's house.

My humans are coming back tomorrow and I know that they will be surprised at how much we've all grown. Sincerely, your friend Luke with only one name and proud of it...

From Bella

"From Bella...I'm sort of the "middle" puppy and I weighed more than the other puppies. If anyone should get two names, it should be me. I'm sure that my humans had a good reason for giving Maggie Whetstone two names, but they haven't told me yet. My puppy life is pretty much like my brothers and sisters -- eat & sleep. That Nathan guy is really a lot of fun. He has taken TONS of pictures of all of us. He's a really good photographer too. I hope that he and Cassie can come up with something neat to remember our litter by. I probably should mention the two little puppies that came after me and before Luke -- and didn't make it. It was really sad. My humans were sad too, but those things happen and if they weren't healthy it was for the best. I'm sure anxious to get my eyes open and see the big world around me. I have a feeling that the view won't be that good at first, but it's bound to get better soon. There are also rumors that we will have a change in diet as well. We haven't seen our other humans for a long time. Nathan said that they went to Minnesota -- where ever that is."

From Helen

"Hi, my name is Helen and I was the second puppy born. My human says that I was small, but I'm really growing fast. I might have a Blenheim spot on my head -- I guess that's a good thing. I'm really a quite little girl. I eat & sleep & eat & sleep. Sometimes it's hard to do either because the rest of the puppies try and crowd me out especially the boys. I have two sisters, Isabella and Maggie Whetstone. I wonder why Maggie Whetstone has two names. All the rest of the puppies are wondering too. Oh well...I don't ask many questions. I just like to eat & sleep & eat & sleep...I guess I've said that before, haven't I? I'm also working on my nose -- I want to do a really nice job of filling it in. Maggie started her pepper nose first, but I'm catching up fast. I would like to write more, but I'm getting sleepy..ZZZZZZZZZ."

From Gabe -- the oldest puppy

"I didn't realize the pressure that could come about by being the first born puppy. First of all, I had to sort of "pave the way" for my siblings and then it seems like I'm always first to be weighed and picked up. It's a lot of responsibility because everyone wants to see how I've grown and if my eyes are open. It's bad enough that Maggie Whetstone beat my with that "pepper nose" thing, but I've pretty much caught up with her on that. And...what's with her having a last name anyway? Honestly, the rest of us just have one name, but she has TWO --Maggie Whetstone. I'll have to ask our humans about that one. I like staying at Nathan's house. He's a really cool guy and takes good care of us. We're staying in his kitchen -- good smells, I think although I don't really know. So far all we get is Mom's milk and it really good stuff. Mom seems to have a never-ending supply of the stuff and that's a good thing. Boy Isabelle can sure root in there for muil. I'm really wondering what it means to have my eyes open? I wonder what I"ll see? I think I'm beginning to hear too, but how would I know about that? Being a puppy is just full of new things."

Sincerely Gabe with no second name.

9-07-08 1 Week Update

“I can believe that the babies are a week old!” They continue to do well and developing their “pepper” noses. Each puppy gains every day with Bella continuing to outweigh her siblings. Cassie has added a picture of Gabe & my cell phone so you can see how he’s grown. Ivy has also been laying on her back a lot – I assume that making so much good milk is a hot job. Nathan is going to puppy-sit this week and he’s promised to update the blog with pictures and let everyone know when they open their eyes.”

Puppy Update 09-01-08

09-01 I just finished the 09-01 weigh-in and all the babies are growing like little puppies should! Gabe now weighs 7 ½ ounces – he’s gained a whole ounce since birth. Helen weighs 6 ¼ ounces also up an ounce. Isabella is our little chunky girl. She now weighs 8 ¼ ounces up from 7.0 at birth. Luke has also gained an ounce and now weighs 6 ¼ ounces. Margaret – last but not least tips the scales at 5 ¾ ounces – up one ounce.

The nights are much quieter now and Ivy is sleeping outside the box a lot. I’m sure that is because she feels comfortable doing that and can get more rest that way. She now has her girlish figure back – except for her milk supply which is tremendous – yeah for Ivy and the puppies.

The Puppies are Here!!!

AKC Champion English Ivy and her humans (John & Andrea Colley) proudly announce the arrival of her new babies!

SEE ALL PICTURES HERE:http://flickr.com/photos/southwindcavaliers/

From Andi…Ivy is busy nursing the babies so I will give a little update on the last 24+ hours.

Yesterday morning (Friday, August 28) when I got up, Ivy was acting “funny” and differently from the last week. I left John to “hold down the fort” while I went to an all day Leadership Retreat at the Red Cross. John called me to come home about an hour after I got there. I came home and stayed about two hours watching Ivy sleep. I went back to the retreat and John called about 4:00 PM and thought that I should come home again. I did and Ivy was doing a lot of panting and nesting.

John put up the Aerobed next to the dog room and spent the night close to Ivy. (She loves sleeping in the bed – how could I refuse?) We were up most of the night and while she was sleeping AGAIN, I decided to make run for groceries. When I got home, there was a puppy with Ivy in the whelping box. Little Gabe was followed quickly by Helen and Isabella. After a very long wait, there were two little stillborn puppies. Then much to our surprise, little Luke arrived to join the family. Mom and babies are doing great – the little ones are eating well. I am exhausted.

I just realized that one of the “fearsome foursome” is hidden by Ivy’s ear – a really warm place to be.

John took Ivy to the vet for a pitocin shot and she popped another puppy out at the vet’s office. It’s a little girl 4 ¾ ounces – no name because I wasn’t expecting SEVEN! She’ll have an “M” name…hmmm…..

King Charles Cavalier Puppies Coming Soon!

“We have babies on board! We did an x-ray Friday afternoon and there are definitely babies to be born. Ivy’s first possible due date is tomorrow, Monday, August 25. She is really miserable and does a lot of sighing and is very restless. I’ll be glad when the puppies are all here and both of us can sleep again.

I’ll probably sleep close to Ivy for the next several nights until the puppies are whelped.

I spent yesterday rounding up the “whelping” supplies and finally located the lost heating pad in the middle of the night. I guess I’m a nervous puppy Mom. It’s been three years since we’ve had a litter but I’m ready and I know that Ivy is. The vet counted five puppies for sure and possibly a sixth one up high. If you look closely at the x-say, you might be able to see tiny, little skulls or backbones.

More to come…”
